Prost woke with a start, shivering as he lay on the cot in his small quarters. The ceiling of his room stood just tall enough for him to stand, the walls only spanning wide enough for him to extend his arms outward in any direction. At first, Riln’s assigning him this room had been an obvious slight, an attack on his worth as a person, but over time Prost had learned to appreciate it. Riln hardly slept, or at least it seemed that way, but his quarters were at least twenty times the space of Prost’s. Filled with lavish furniture and red adornments, it could have been the luxurious quarters of a king.

Yet Prost didn’t care. Security was all he cared about. The wooden door to his room remained closed, a lock fitted firmly into the edge. There were occasions when Riln had locked him in here, but those were long past. Over time, Riln didn’t care to lock him away. He must have realized Prost was unlikely to kill him in his sleep. Despite the many times Prost had considered it, he had never acted.

Until Stilten, at least.

Since he’d returned to their lair, he’d not taken any moments to consider his decision in Stilten. As far as he could tell, not one soul from Watchlight witnessed the event, yet something within warned him to be cautious.

His body continued to quiver, as if from the cold, yet the cavern stayed warm throughout the complete year of Lindrad, mainly because of the hot springs that flowed through parts of the mountain. Prost gritted his teeth, trying to control the shaking. Something itched at the back of his mind, a piece of information that he couldn’t quite grasp yet knew was there. He felt as if he recognized something important but couldn’t recall exactly the nature of it.

Ah, he wakes, leaving me with little time to my own devices, Ugglyn whispered in his mind.

More than the eerie sound of the voice inside, the words grated at Prost’s soul. The suggestion that Ugglyn had any opportunity to do anything of his own accord terrified Prost to the core. Prost began analyzing his body, trying to get any hint of being moved while he slumbered. He slept in his normal clothing, something unusual for most, but common for him, and nothing appeared to be awry. Prost hoped that if Ugglyn had taken his body on a stroll for the night, he’d feel something in his limbs. Ugglyn rumbled with satisfaction inside of him, apparently watching Prost do his physical analysis.

I can’t move you while you sleep, so there’s no point in fretting about it, Ugglyn said, evidently amused.

While he appreciated the anti-god’s forthright nature on most days, Prost had little trust in anything the being said. He didn’t know the full history of how Ugglyn came to be, but Prost knew that one didn’t obtain a status like his by being truthful.

What have you done? What do you mean by leaving you to your own devices? Prost demanded hotly.
